Reduction Mammoplasty or Mastopexy

Reduction mammoplasty is the surgical procedure for the reduction, reconstruction and lifting of the breasts so that they are proportional to the body; this procedure also reduces the size of the areola (when it is very large) and elevates the nipples so that they are centered.

How is the procedure performed?

The surgeon makes three surgical cuts (incisions) one around the areola, the second from the areola down to the crease under the breast and the third and final one under the breast and through the lower crease of the breast; through these cuts excess fat, skin and breast tissue is removed. The nipple is repositioned to be central and higher and the areola is reduced in size.

What type of anesthesia is used?

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia to provide greater patient safety.

Recovery time

After a surgical procedure the body enters into a recovery process both internally and externally; and these times are usually totally different. For pain reduction it can take 3 to 4 weeks, for the wound to close it takes approximately one month and for the patient to resume daily activities such as driving, exercising and lifting approximately three months.

Postoperative care

  • Take or apply the medications ordered by the surgeon in the corresponding schedule.
  • Do not take any type of medication that has not been recommended by the surgeon.
  • It is recommended to walk fifteen minutes every hour, this in order to prevent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
  • Avoid an upright posture during the first weeks in order to prevent the wound from opening.
  • Do not raise your arms above your shoulders.
  • Do not perform any type of physical activity, exertion or weight bearing during the first three months.
  • Keep on the anti-embolism stockings of strong compression, at least the first fifteen days.
  • They should only be removed when bathing.
  • Eat an adequate diet that is rich in iron, vitamins and minerals which will help to raise and stabilize the hemoglobin.
  • Attend medical check-ups when they are scheduled.
  • Watch for signs of possible infection in the surgical wound such as: redness, heat, inflammation, blood or pus.

Frequently Asked Questions

This procedure also known as mastopexy can be performed with or without breast implants, according to the needs and desires of each patient, since with the same breast tissue can be reconstructed and lift the breast. But it should be clarified that whether to put implants or not depends on the result that the patient wants to have since these are not the same, because when a mastopexy is performed with implants they help to have as a result a rounder shape, the breast is fuller and with projection.
Generally there are two ways to perform a breast reduction and breast lift, through the areola or inverted T. The technique is defined by the surgeon after evaluating the patient's case. The technique is defined by the surgeon once the patient's case has been evaluated, since for patients with gigantomastia, large breasts or too sagging the best option will be to perform the incision in inverted T.
Patients who have undergone a breast reduction and breast lift can breastfeed without any problem, since the tissue removed is skin, fat and breast tissue and these do not affect the lactiferous ducts at all.
Yes, there are problems and back pain when the patient suffers from gigantaomastia because the large size and weight of the breasts can affect the spine.
