What are the diseases of the vascular system?

Circulatory problems, also called vascular diseases, are disorders that affect the vascular system. They are common and can be serious. Some types include: aneurysm, arteriosclerosis, blood clots, coronary artery disease, carotid artery disease, stroke, varicose veins, among others.

The goal of our specialists is to diagnose and treat early vascular diseases (disorders affecting the arteries or veins) that affect blood flow, either by blockage or weakening of the blood vessels, or by damage to the valves found in the veins. Since other organs and structures in the body can be damaged by one of these diseases.

There are many different causes for different types of vascular disorders and diseases. However, coronary artery disease (heart attack), cerebrovascular disease (stroke) and peripheral arterial disease (loss of limb or limb use) are some of the leading causes of illness and death in the U.S.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy can treat twisted and dilated veins, known as varicose veins. Varicose veins usually form on the legs. Sclerotherapy can also be used to treat spider veins, which are a mild type of varicose veins. This treatment works best on small varicose veins.

Sclerofoam

Sclerosis with Foam or Microfoam of Varicose Veins is a technique that consists of injecting this type of foam inside the dilated veins, thus causing an inflammatory reaction in the vascular walls that, upon healing, makes them disappear. This injection of sclerosing foam is monitored by ultrasound.

Radiofrequency saphenous
vein occlusion

This is a minimally invasive technique of stripping varicose veins using radiofrequency energy delivered through a catheter. The catheter closes the vein from the inside. This treatment requires only a small incision in the leg. It is often done in the office using only local anesthesia and does not require a hospital stay. Most patients find the procedure almost painless and the vast majority of patients return to their normal routine the next day.

This procedure is indicated to treat venous insufficiency.

Duplex and infiltrations

The duplex/doppler ultrasound exam examines blood flow in the major arteries and veins in the arms and legs. The test uses duplex ultrasonography to visualize blood flow and doppler ultrasonography is an audio means of listening to blood flow. This test is performed as an alternative to arteriography and venography and can help diagnose abnormalities in an artery or vein.
